When you keep digital assets on an exchange or platform, that company holds the keys. With self-custody, you hold them yourself. It gives you control, and it also gives you responsibility.
What is a private key?
A private key is the secret that proves ownership of a wallet and allows funds to be moved. Wallets usually show it to you as a seed or recovery phrase: a list of 12 or 24 words. Whoever has those words can control the wallet.
Why self-custody matters
- Control: your assets do not depend on a single company staying open or honest.
- Fewer single points of failure: a platform freeze or collapse does not lock you out.
- Ownership: you decide when and how to use your assets.
The responsibility that comes with it
If you lose your recovery phrase, or someone else sees it, your assets may be lost for good. Blockchain transactions generally cannot be reversed.
Practical tips
- Write your recovery phrase down offline. Never photograph it, email it or store it in the cloud.
- Download wallets only from official sources, and keep your devices updated.
- Test with a small amount before moving larger sums.
- Double-check addresses before you confirm a transaction.
SNH Global Tech is non-custodial. We will never ask for your private keys, seed phrases or passwords.
